A History of The Harris Reunion
1954 to 1963

August 29, 1954 First Reunion was held at the home of Mr. & Mrs. C.I. Watkins in the Fairplains Community. A long table was set up under a shade tree and was covered with food brought by family members. Around 200 people attended. Lunch was served at 1:30 in the afternoon.
September 4, 1955 Reunion was held at Camp Joe Harris on Camp Joe Harris Road
September 2, 1956 Reunion was held at Harris Hill Tennis Court, Wilkesboro NC
September 1, 1957 Reunion was held at Harris Hill Tennis Court, Wilkesboro NC
August 31, 1958 Reunion was held at Harris Hill Tennis Court, Wilkesboro NC. First reunion bulletin was printed, consisting of 3 pages. A table was reserved for members who were 65 or older, called the "Golden Age Table". Twelve members were: Sadie Watkins, Isabelle Brown, Lillian Petty, Addie Harris, Mary Joe Harris, Dinah Harris, Rev. Charlie Harris, Camie Harris, Erie Harris, William Thomas Harris, Reuben Blackburn, and Minnie Gibbs. Anyone born a Harris and who had a birthday on reunion day was crowned King and/or Queen of the Reunion. Lillie Harris Mitchell was crowned Queen.
September 5, 1959 A fellowship reception was held at the home of Mr. & Mrs. Avery Barber. Honored nine sets of Harris twins: Alease Lomax Cundiff & Louise Lomax Paige, Sallie Harris & Suzie Harris Triplett, Martha Harris Lomax & Mary Harris Brown, Jane & Judy Harris, Hughey & Dewey Harris, Donald & Ronald Hunt, Frank & Grant Harris, Mary Diane Blackburn & Mary Diedre Blackburn, twin daughters of Mr. & Mrs. Robert Reynolds; and three family ministers: Rev. Charlie Harris, Rev. C.W. Bailey and Rev. Frank Bailey
September 6, 1959 Reunion was scheduled to be held at the Lewis Harris Estate, but due to rain was moved to Lincoln Heights gym. Paid tribute to the late Lewis Harris, whose land was the reunion site. Special thanks were made to Camie A. Harris and family, Jordan Harris, Dinah and Florence Harris who worked hard to make the grounds available for the Reunion.
September 3, 1960 Reception was held at the home of Mrs. Eddie Harris Ralls.
September 4, 1960 Reunion was held at the Lewis Harris Estate on Edgewood Road. First reunion dues were collected - $2.00 per family. Had a beginning balance of $10.82.
September 2, 1961 Reception was held at the home of Grace Harris.
September 3, 1961 Reunion was held at the Lewis Harris Estate. Reunion members along with several churches donated money, time, labor and materials to rebuild the home of Jettie Harris, widower of Sam Harris. The home on Edgewood Road was destroyed by fire in April 1960. The home consisted of three rooms and two porches. Cost $1090.08. Raised $100.30 on reunion day.
September 1, 1962 Reception was held at Camp Joe Harris.
September 2, 1962 Reunion was held at Camp Joe Harris. Dedicated to the late Joe Harris, on whose estate the reunion was held. Honored the couple present that was married the longest, Tyra & Lillian Harris Petty; the parent/parents with the most children present, Erie & Camie Harris, and the Golden Age Group.
